Frequently asked questions

What is a trade school?

A trade school (also called a vocational or technical school) teaches the hands-on skills for a specific job, like welding, HVAC, electrical work, truck driving or medical assisting. Programs usually take a few weeks to two years, cost far less than a four-year degree, and prepare you for licensing or certification exams.

How much do trade jobs pay?

It depends on the trade. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the 2025 median pay was $63,800 for plumbers, $63,190 for electricians and $61,010 for HVAC technicians. Many trades also offer paid apprenticeships, so you earn while you learn.

Can I get financial aid for trade school?

Yes. Many accredited trade schools and community colleges accept federal financial aid, including Pell Grants, which you apply for with the FAFSA. Ask each school whether its program is eligible, and look into apprenticeships, employer tuition programs, state workforce grants and GI Bill benefits.

Is TradeSchools.co free?

Yes. Searching, comparing and getting matched with schools is free for students. Some schools work with us on marketing, which is how we keep the site free.
